Guide to Essential Skincare
Topical Skin Care is vitally important to protect your outer layer of skin and keep it healthy. Knowing what products work together, how they benefit your skin, and the order in which to use them is important when selecting the best skin care routine. Our nurses and aestheticians are available by phone and appointment to personally advise you.
We recommend that you use one product from each category with individualized selection: Cleanser, Antioxidant, Exfoliator, Growth factor, Sunscreen, Retinoid
Cleanser– Choosing an effective cleanser is essential as it allows other products you use to penetrate more effectively, morning and evening. Sensitive patients with Rosacea need to maintain the skin barrier with gentle products.
Antioxidants- Antioxidants are vital in both preventing and repairing age and sun-related damage. Antioxidants combat the free-radical damage that is responsible for the visible signs of aging. They also increase collagen production, reduce hyper-pigmentation and brighten your skin.
Antioxidants products should include one or more of the following ingredients: Vitamin A, C, E, Green Tea, and Coenzyme Q10.
Growth Factors- Growth factors are naturally found within the skin and act as messengers to stimulate new collagen. As you age, your body’s natural production of growth factors slows dramatically. Growth factors strengthen elasticity to soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, creating a healthier and more radiant skin.
Exfoliation- Judicious exfoliation allows your products to penetrate better, it keeps the pores minimized, makes your skin look healthier, fresher and more radiant. Exfoliation can be achieved in two ways – chemically and physically.
Physical exfoliators buff away dead skin through a mechanical abrasion, (Hydrafacial MD or Clarisonic brush). Chemical exfoliation with Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids may be applied professionally and used in products. They work by exfoliating the barrier of dead skin cells clogging the surface to uncover fresh new cells below. Care must be taken in sensitive patients not to aggressively use exfoliators.
Sunscreen- A medical grade sunscreen is your most important topical in your daily skincare routine. It protects your skin against skin cancer and prevents visible signs of aging. Apply a sunscreen of at least SPF 30+ under makeup everyday regardless of season or weather. Broad-spectrum protection (UVA/UVB, heat and infrared) helps defend against ultraviolet rays that lead to the visible appearance of fine lines, brown and red discoloration.
We carry top line sunscreens such as Sente and Alastin.
Retinol- Vitamin-A derivative that helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, and improve skin texture. Retinol speeds up cell turnover, removes the dead cells that cause dullness, and boosts collagen and elastin by stimulating cellular repair at the deepest level of the skin.
Retinols are available by prescription or milder strengths from our office.
