Volume loss in the cheeks is a common sign of facial aging. And while there are options (ranging from contouring makeup to extreme methods like permanent implants) available to plump your cheeks, an off-label use that doctor’s have looked to as a way to fix aging cheeks may soon be supported by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The FDA has recently recommended that Juvéderm Voluma XC be granted FDA approval for cheek augmentation. As of now, there are no dermal fillers in the US that are FDA-approved to correct age-related volume loss in the cheeks, which would make Juvéderm Voluma XC the first of its kind if ultimately approved by the FDA.
“Today’s recommendation is an important step in the FDA review process for Juvéderm Voluma XC,” says Scott M. Whitcup MD, executive vice president of research and development and chief scientific officer of Allergan, the company behind Botox and Juvéderm. “Allergan is committed to working with the FDA as they continue their review of our PMA for Juvéderm Voluma XC, with the goal of providing consumers with the first treatment option that has been specifically developed to help restore cheek volume that has been lost over time.”
If approved, Allergan anticipates Juvéderm Voluma XC will be available in doctors’ offices towards the end of the year. Stay tuned for updates and remember, if you’re considering any type of injections, make sure that you’re using an expert injector.
