A split-face study of 20 patients revealed that combination treatment with Botox and Hyaluronic Acid-based fillers (such as Juvederm, Voluma, Perlane, Restylane, and Belotero) for forehead and glabella rhytides produced longer-lasting results than treatment with Botox alone. Meghan Dubina, MD, et al, of the Department of Dermatology, Northwestern University, Chicago, injected Botox alone on one side of the forehead/glabella and HA Filler, followed by Botox on the other side. Blinded ratings were obtained to assess the effectiveness of treatment for static and dynamic rhytides (wrinkles) at two weeks, six weeks, three months and six months post treatment. Subjects performed a self-evaluation at the end of the study.
The results, which were published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (December 2013), revealed comparable efficacy both areas with 100% of subjects experiencing an improvement from baseline at two, six and 12 weeks. At 24 weeks, there was a greater reduction in static and dynamic wrinkles on the side that received combination treatment with toxins and HA fillers. The patient self-evaluations revealed a "nominal preference for combination treatment," the researchers noted.
