Expectations For Cosmetic Procedures

September 4, 2013

The facial aging process begins with surface and subsurface structural changes in multiple facial tissue layers, including, skin, fat, muscle and bone. A youthful look depends on having the right amount of facial fat in the right places. Redistribution, accumulation, and atrophy of fat lead to facial volume loss. When deciding on any cosmetic procedure choosing your doctor is the most important step you will take.  When consulting make sure the doctor is board certified, specializes in any procedures you are interested in, that you are comfortable and confident with them, and lastly that your expectations are realistic. When you consult with Doctor Olson, you will collaboratively develop a personal plan designed just for you; your goals, your schedule and your options. The consultation with Doctor Olson is the most valuable time you will spend prior to treatment

A facelift is a surgical procedure to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck, such as: sagging in the midface, fat that has fallen or is displaced, loss of muscle tone in the lower face may create jowls, loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw can make even a person of normal weight appear to have a double chin. A facelift does not add volume nor change your fundamental appearance.

The loss of facial volume and elasticity also leads to the formation of wrinkles, creases, folds and hollows. Doctor Olson has extensive experience with advanced fillers. Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Restylane®,Perlane®, Radiesse® and Sculptra® are artfully used to sculpt the face by replacing lost volume due to fat and bone loss. Doctor Olson chooses fillers with differing characteristics to best shape the face for each individual. She can correct or diminish problems like drooping eye brows, dark under eye circles, sunken areas under the eyes into the cheek, frown lines, flat cheeks, weak chin, jowls, jaw-line hollows and scars. These new generation dermal and deep fillers provide longer lasting and more natural results. All of the products used by Doctor Olson are FDA-approved and she personally treats all her patients.

This just in, while a facelift can make you look more youthful, it won't necessarily make you more attractive to other people. At least, that’s what new research found to be true.

In the first study to try to and quantify attractiveness after cosmetic procedures like facelifts, browlifts and eyelifts, scientists asked random people to guess the age and rank the "attractiveness" of patients after viewing photos of them either before or after their enhancements. These people offering ratings got to see either pre-surgery or post-surgery photos, but never got to see both the before and after photos of any given patient. They were then asked to estimate the patient's age and to subjectively rate their attractiveness on a scale of 1 to 10. All photographs had patients without makeup or jewelry, so as to not influence the ratings.

What did they find? Research published by JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery said that on average, patients were rated about three years younger after surgery, but were not deemed to look any more attractive than they were before surgery.

This can be taken as good news to some and bad news to others. For those looking to subtly look more refreshed by cosmetic enhancement, a noticeable difference will be attained and enjoyed. If one is looking to appear 15 years younger after an eyelift, they might want to adjust their expectations.
