Volume Loss

January 2, 2014

New Beauty Article "What's Really Causing Volume Loss"

We all have varying degrees of fat in our faces and a multitude of factors can cause changes to these fatty compartments. "Volume loss occurs because of gradual changes in the appearance of the fat," says Littleton, CO, Facial Plastic surgeon Bren Smith, MD. "There is a loss both superficially and at a deeper level that comes along with aging."

As fat begins to waste away, contours of the face become reshaped, creating a guant or skeletal look. "Besides fat loss, there is also a change in the amount and quality of both collagen and elastin fibers, which can have an effect on the condition of the skin," says Dr. Smith. Taking good care of yourself and staying away from things that speed up aging are good starting points.

Want to know if it's a loss of fat that's adding years to your appearance or something else that's causing you to look old? If you answer yes to any of the following questions, it's probably lack of volume that's aging you:

Does your face look more like a square that an inverted triangle?

When fat dissipates from the center of the face, the face takes on more of a square shape as opposed to an upside triangle.

**Dr. Olson prefers to use Sculptra and Juvederm Voluma to soften the contours and add volume to soften the hollow areas.**

Are you noticing under eye hollows?

Westlake Village, CA, facial plastic surgeon Kristina Tansavatdi, MD, says with fat loss under the eyes, "The fat in the cheeks sinks down so the eyes look tired." **Dr. Olson is an orbital specialist with extensive knowledge and experience in periorbital and eyelid reconstruction and rejuvenation. Restylane is Doctor Olson's preferred filler for the under-eye area, or "tear trough".**

– Are your cheeks saggy?

"As the cheeks lose fat the descend from high to low, which can cause nasolabial folds, marionette lines and jowls," says Dr.  Smith.

**Dr. Olson prefers to use Juvederm Voluma and Sculptra to add volume back in the cheek area.**
