Choosing a Plastic Surgeon for your eyes

June 19, 2013

Did you know members in the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery are almost all NOT board certified in Plastic Surgery!

The American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) is a medical society[1] representing board certified specialist physicians whose purpose is "to advance education, research, and the quality of clinical practice in the fields of aesthetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery specializing in the face, orbits, eyelids, and lacrimal system."

Today's cosmetic surgery aesthetic is more natural and even, unlike the looks of the past.  Wether performing upper, lower, or both eyelid rejuvenation surgery requires your surgeon to make many small, precise incisions to remove and/or repostion fat and tissue, then reposition the underlying facial muscle.  Overlying skin is redraped and excess skin is removed.

When choosing your doctor for your eyes you should look at one thing.  If your plastic surgeon is a member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS).  The society of over 550 members was founded in 1969 with the goal of establishing a group of surgeons who have attained a specialized level of training and expertise. To help train qualified physicians, ASOPRS sponsors oculofacial fellowship programs intended for postgraduate physicians who have completed an accredited ophthalmologyresidency."
