BBL VS. IPL – The Power of Light

January 31, 2019

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) and Broad Brand Light (BBL) work by directing light energy into the skin which is converted to heat as it reaches its target. Skin is made up of  layers and we use filters to penetrate specific depths to target skin concerns such as:

  • Skin Tone
  • Pigmentation
  • Rosacea
  • Broken Capillaries
  • Acne

BBL and IPL share the same basic concept, there are some significant differences in technology that sets BBL apart in a field of its own.

  1. Comfort – The BBL has finessed sapphire crystal adaptors and precision thermoelectric cooling. The different size crystal adaptors and cooling ensures each pulse is cooled to the selected temperature to ensure the patients comfort. The IPL has one big crystal without cooling and no adaptors which can make it more difficult to treat smaller areas.
  2. Number of treatments – Due to BBL’s advanced parameters I typically recommend 1 to 3 treatments spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. With IPL devices an average of 6 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart are usually needed.
  3.  Not all BBL treatments are the same – The BBL machine may be far superior, but the clinical skill of the operator is as important as the device being used. I am committed to patient safety and continuing education to provide my patients the most advanced techniques for the best results. I have over 6 years’ experience using the BBL device and have been trained multiple times by Dr. Bitter, the world renowned light expert. During a BBL treatment you receive about 200 pulses, but with my advanced treatments you will receive over 300 pulses in addition to treatment of the lips. An average IPL treatment you usually receive no more than 100 pulses.
  4.  Skin Aging – Scientific evidence has shown that regular BBL treatments functionally rejuvenate skin and delay aging. A Stanford Study was released led by Dr. Bitter and Dr. Chang that shows BBL treatments can stop the clock on aging and has been shown to change the gene expression associated with skin aging. There are no studies done with the IPL and skin aging.

Training and Experience are what sets your results apart!
